Android Wear has become a trend and you can actually realize people are starting to use it. There’s time that I head over to the mall and I do realize plenty of people messing around with their smart watch. So, here I am with the Moto 360 Sport review where Motorola Malaysia provided me the review unit for two weeks of usage as my daily watch replacing my G-Shock. 😛
The Moto 360 Sport is designed to withstand your outdoor activities and that is why its name after “sport”. The watch strap is made out of silicone which feels like rubber to me. This usage is justified so that it can handle the dirt that catches up while you work out in the gym or out running and your start sweating all over. The watch strap does look cheap, however it serves its purpose perfectly. Do take note that this strap is not hot-swap-able with any other strap at all. You choose black, you remain with that forever. Overall, love its outlook as I love something that represents my age or rather not used to wearing something which usually elderly people use. 😛
A quick recap to the specifications:-
- 1.37-inch display with Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection
- 1.2GHz Snapdragon 400 Quad core processor
- 4GB of internal storage
- IP67 dust and water resistant rating
- Heart rate monitor
- GPS
- Dual Mics
- WiFi
- Bluetooth
- 512MB of RAM
- 300mAh battery ( supports wireless charging)
- Weighs at 54g
First thing to take note about the Moto 360 Sport will be its display tech called “AnyLight”. This allows the display brightness to adjust wisely according to its lighting condition. I have tested it properly and it does work flawlessly. I’ve tried in dark area such as the cinema and it worked fantastically without disturbing or irritating the person next to me. Speaking of which, this watch does attract a lot of attention. I realized plenty of people find this watch to be interesting as they start gossiping which I caught them off-guard. 🙂
If you check the contents within the box, you will find that in order to charge the Moto 360 Sport; the USB cable provided needs to be plugged in to the wireless dock provided. This is the only way you can get the watch charged. It works pretty simple, just place it on the dock and the light on the dock will indicate that it started charging. The watch takes about 1 hour to fully charge and lasts throughout the entire day and you have to definitely charge it by end of the day.
Besides that, I personally use it for running purpose. Since it has a build-in GPS, I find it to work well enough to track my running details which includes the distance, map and speed via it’s default app called “Moto Body”. There’s also option to install third party apps such as Endomondo on the watch, its entirely up to you as I find the native app to work as good as any other third party apps as well. Not to forget, the heart rate monitor helps me to check my heart rate on-the-go while running. For the runners out there, this is definitely the full package you been looking for. Of course, it serves well to notify your notifications when paired with your smartphone.
For the fitness freaks out there, this is not the perfect watch for you as other fitness watch has much more features that will be useful for you guys. Apart from jogging and walking, there’s literally no sleep tracking or any preset tracking for swimming, cycling and others. Just because it is IP67 certified, it does not mean it is safe to wear it and swim. It is water resistant and not water proof as it can withstand water splash and rain.
Since the Moto 360 Sport has a build in GPS and Google Maps pre-installed, you can actually use the watch to navigate or use the voice command feature (Ok Google) to navigate either via the watch or the smartphone paired as well. As I mentioned, since “Ok Google” feature is there, you can make full use of that feature which can be very handy to some people who rely on that heavily. Other than that, you can use features such as stopwatch, wireless music via Bluetooth and voice recording. You can also use it as a camera viewfinder via third party app.
For me, I don’t fancy having an Android Wear smart watch at the moment. There’s no real need yet as your smartphone itself could do plenty of things. My conclusion will be if you have the money for it, just go ahead and give it a shot. It is stylish in terms of sporty looks and does not look as how much you paid for it. It costs RM1399 here in Malaysia and you can get it cheaper via online retailers.
