It’s finally official! WhatsApp has announced a new option where you could start backing up your WhatsApp related data such as chat history, videos and audios. This news was found on Google Drive blog where they did mention the official update will start rolling out to Android users in couple of months time. There’s no indication for iOS users for now but we can be quite sure it will be made available there too.

How to start using Google Drive Backup for WhatsApp on Android?

Since we mentioned that the update is not really out there, it will take some time to reach most Android users. However, there’s an option to sideload the version of WhatsApp which Google Drive Backup is made available  by downloading the APK here.  Once you’ve downloaded this, start installing the APK and you can already find the option to start backup:-

How to create a Google Drive backup:

  1. Open WhatsApp.
  2. Go to Menu Button > Settings > Chats and calls > Chat backup.
  3. Tap on Back up to Google Drive and set up the backup frequency to your liking.
  4. You will be prompted to select a Google account that you will back up your chat history to. If you do not have a Google account, tap Add account when prompted. Please remember the Google account you are using for the backup.
  5. Tap on Back up over to choose the network you wish to use for backup. Please note that backing up over cellular may result in additional data charges.

It is better to wait for the official update to reach your Android smartphone. This is because usually the update takes time to reach simply because there’s still need of performance and bug fixes. So, when you start side-loading APKs, you can  expect some flaws within the application.
